Boat Shopping? Walk The Docks!

Walking The Docks - The Clever Boater

Exploring the docks at marinas is a great way to get your own private boat show. It provides a chance to experience a wide variety of boats and immerse yourself in the boating lifestyle. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a newcomer to the maritime world, walking the docks can give you valuable insights and help you make informed decisions when shopping for a boat.

A Diverse Fleet Awaits

Marinas feature a diverse array of vessels, ranging from sleek sailboats gliding gracefully across the water to robust motor yachts that offer speed and luxury. As you stroll along the docks, you’ll come across everything from compact fishing boats to grand catamarans, as well as a variety of other options. This wide selection allows you to compare different styles, sizes, and features, helping you identify what best suits your needs and preferences.

Learning from the Enthusiasts

Boat owners are often passionate about their vessels and are eager to share their experiences and knowledge. Engaging with them can provide a wealth of information that brochures and online reviews may overlook.

Most boat owners are enthusiastic about discussing the joys of their vessels, as well as the challenges they’ve encountered. This honest feedback can be invaluable in helping you identify the pros and cons of different types of boats, the features to consider, and potential pitfalls to avoid.

An Invitation to Explore

Occasionally, boat owners may invite guests to step aboard and explore their prized vessels. This firsthand experience can be invaluable, offering a tangible sense of space, comfort, and functionality that pictures simply cannot convey.

Walking through a boat allows you to assess the layout and amenities directly, helping you visualize how each feature aligns with your dreams of living on the water. By visiting various boats, you’ll get an idea of things like the size of the refrigerators, shower configurations, stairs and ladders to negotiate, and, most importantly, a stand-up engine room!

Just remember, never board without an invitation, and take off your shoes!

Take Names!

As you stroll along the docks, keep a lookout for the names on the boats you pass. You’ll get ideas for names you might like when you get your boat. Even if you don’t find the perfect name for you, you’ll at least get a chuckle or a groan from time to time at the creative names boaters have come up with.

Getting Around Locked Docks

Most marina docks are accessible during the day. However, you will come across gated docks that require access cards or codes to open. In these cases, a visit to the marina office may offer an easy in. Explain that you are boat shopping and want to check out some of the boats on the dock. Ask if you can get access. Most marinas will be happy to loan you a pass or code. After all, you may be a future dock customer!

There are areas like large inner-city marinas where you may encounter resistance to gaining access to the docks. Here, you may just have to look from shore, or you may be able to piggyback entry with a local boater. Just strike up a conversation with them and follow along through the gate.

Avoid peeking in windows on docks with many liveaboards. We were sitting eating dinner once when someone climbed aboard and peeked in the window, thinking the boat was unoccupied. Boy, were we BOTH surprised! And, never go aboard a boat unless invited.

Making the Most of Your Marina Visit

To fully enjoy your visit to the marina, approach each interaction with curiosity and openness. Ask questions, listen to stories, and take notes. Whether you’re seriously shopping, simply browsing, or dreaming of your next boat, exploring the dock can be both enlightening and fun. You’ll find some unique boats as you take a leisurely stroll down the dock and allow the marina to reveal the vast array of spending opportunities that await you!
