Unlocking Connections: The Joy of Exchanging Boat Cards

Cruising your boat is more than just a journey. It’s an adventure filled with opportunities to connect with fellow boaters and make new lifelong friends. A tradition among boaters, especially those cruising America’s Great Loop, is the exchanging of “Boat Cards”. Much like exchanging business cards or the old childhood tradition of swapping trading cards, boat cards serve as a great way to make lasting connections and foster long-term friendships.

The Charm of Boat Cards

Boat cards are akin to business cards but tailored for the boating community. They provide an easy and memorable method for sharing contact information with those you meet along your travels. These cards not only break the ice but also help recall the exciting and varied encounters you experience while cruising.

Creating Your Boat Cards

Designing your boat cards is a creative process that can enhance your boating experience. When crafting these little pieces of connection, consider including:

  • Your Names: Make sure to list everyone aboard, including pets!
  • Your Boat Name: If your boat name is tricky, add a phonetic pronunciation.
  • Imagery: Pictures of you and your boat personalize the card.
  • Online Presence: URLs to your blog, website, or Facebook profile. Perhaps even a QR code for quick digital access.
  • Contact Information: Share only what you’re comfortable with. We include our home address and mobile phone numbers, but some prefer to add just their email address.
  • Home Port: Identifying where you’re from adds a personal touch.
  • Memberships: Include your AGLCA and/or MTOA membership number so other members can look you up easily.

Design Tips

Choose non-shiny paper for printing your cards. This texture not only feels nice but also allows new friends to jot down notes about your meeting or any additional information. Platforms like VistaPrint.com, Bizay.com, or Moo.com all have online design tools and templates to make creating your Boat Card easy.

When adding photos, ensure that you use high-resolution, original images when creating your card. Most web-based photos are only 76 to 96 dpi (dots per inch), where high-quality printing requires at least 150 dpi and preferably 300 dpi. When you upload your images, the tools will warn you if your image resolution is too low.

Don’t try to cram too much information on your card. Make sure that it is legible, and that text overlaying images doesn’t blend in with the background.

Don’t Spend Too Much

Business Card printing sites will entice you to order more. “Get 500 cards for just $15 more!” While enticing, you may want to adjust your information at some point, so we suggest sticking to 100 cards for casual cruisers, or 250 cards if you are Looping. You can always order more! You should be able to get 100 two-sided color printed cards for under $25.00. Check coupon sites for discount codes, especially for Vistaprint!

Additionally, these sites will offer add-on items such as pads, pens, mouse pads, and coffee mugs. The only accessory we’ve found helpful is a business card holder, and those are usually cheaper on Amazon! Watch that they don’t add them to your shopping cart automatically.

Another added expense is “Expedited Processing”. I was ordering Boat Cards and Business Cards at the same time. I decided to place one order with Standard Processing for $ 6.95 and another with Expedited Processing for $12.95. Both orders arrived on the same day. Unless you are in a real rush, just use the standard delivery option.

Include Kids

For those adventuring with kids, boat cards provide a unique way to engage young ones in the social aspects of boating life. Children often enjoy handing out boat cards to new friends, explaining their journey, and learning about others in return. This engaging activity helps build their confidence and fosters a love for adventure and camaraderie.

Blanks for New Boaters

For new boaters who have not created their boat cards yet, or don’t have any with them, we keep some blank cards that we fill out. These are just laser printer business cards that we print up as needed.

Managing Your Collection

As you travel, you will gather boat cards from your fellow cruisers. Depending on how outgoing you are and how long you cruise, you can amass quite a collection. Over our 9 years of cruising and two Great Loop trips, we’ve collected over 898 cards! They are great for reminding you of names when you come across another boat that you met weeks, months, or even years ago.

Here are a few tips for managing your collection:

  • Use adhesive Post-it tabs to note the date and location you met.
  • Add another Post-it if you reconnect with a boat in the future.
  • Use a 3-ring binder with plastic business card pages. These keep the cards organized, allow you to reorganize quickly, and see both sides.
  • Start with a 1.5″ binder, and you can upgrade as your collection grows.
  • Organize your cards alphabetically by boat name. Boat names are typically easier to remember, and you’ll see them from a distance.
  • Consider creating an index spreadsheet. Brenda keeps a sheet with the boat name, last name, first names, phone number, and home port. This allows her to find a boat card from a last name quickly. Additionally, when we receive a text message from an unfamiliar phone number, we can narrow down who it might be.

Embrace the Tradition

Exchanging boat cards is more than just a quaint tradition; it’s a tool for enriching your Cruising and Great Loop experience. These small cards symbolize big opportunities for connection. Whether you’re recounting memorable docktails or sharing navigational tips for the Florida Keys, boat cards keep those encounters alive, turning your journey into a tapestry of cherished memories and friendships.

So, on your next voyage, make sure to have your boat cards ready. Who knows what fantastic tales and friendships await you?
