As Halloween approaches, I recall the ghosts of Halloweens past on the Great Loop!
October 31st, 2019 – Alton, Illinois
We had just reached Alton, Illinois, on the Mississippi River on our first Loop the day before Halloween. It was cold and rainy on Halloween Eve, with a bit of snow mixed in. There was a small group of Loopers at the Alton Marina, which had pretty much closed up for the season. The only open and warm place for us to get together was in the hall of the bathhouse, outside of the showers!

As with all Looper Events, we made the best of the situation and had a great time with Docktails… Err… Showertails? We’ll call them Halloweentails! Brenda made her Nutty-Buddy-Mini-Acorns!

October 31st, 2023 – Olmstead Lock Anchorage
On our Second Loop, we were a day ahead of our 2019 schedule, and we left Alton, Illinois, for our trip down the Mississippi River to the Ohio River on October 30th. We anchored out at the Cottonwood Anchorage, just below the Cascaskia Lock. The Cottonwood Anchorage is just a small, deep basin behind one of the wing dams. We put up our inflatable Halloween Pumpkin and got a couple of toots and comments on the radio from the tows going past.

The fog rolled in overnight and gave us an eerie setting for Halloween!

That evening, October 31st, we anchored just south of the Olmstead Lock in Bandana, KY, with seven other boats. There will be no party this year!

Wherever Halloween finds you, make sure you have a great time!
Happy Halloween!
