Exploring the
Marine Trawler Owners Association

We belong to two major boating organizations, the America’s Great Loop Cruising Association (AGLCA) and the Marine Trawler Owners Association (MTOA). Most boaters are aware of the AGLCA, but some, especially non-trawler owners, are not familiar with the MTOA, lovingly known as “The Turtles.”

History and Origins

The Marine Trawler Owners Association (MTOA) is a vibrant community of boating enthusiasts brought together by their passion for trawler-style vessels. Since its beginnings in 1990, the MTOA has blossomed from a small group of trawler lovers into a supportive network of over 2,000 members dedicated to championing the interests of trawler enthusiasts all across the United States. One of the charming aspects of the MTOA is its turtle logo, which wonderfully represents the easygoing pace and reliable cruising abilities of trawler boats, beautifully echoing the calm and steady journey of a turtle.

Originally founded as the Marine Trader Owners Association for those who own Marine Trader brand boats, this organization has grown to welcome everyone who loves trawler-style boats and the cruising lifestyle.

As the world of recreational boating has changed, our community has blossomed too! Nowadays, members represent a delightful mix of brands, styles, and boat speeds. Plus, we have many former boat owners who stick around just for the camaraderie and to enjoy the cruising lifestyle through the experiences of others.

Membership

The MTOA is a wonderful community for those who love trawler-style boating. Whether you’re a seasoned mariner or just starting to explore the delightful world of trawlers, you’ll find joy in discovering beautiful waterways, forming lasting friendships with fellow boaters, and joining in on fun community activities. We’re excited to welcome all owners of trawler-style boats, and while we may have a soft spot for trawlers over cruisers or, dare I say, sailboats, we truly embrace all boating enthusiasts with open arms!

Becoming a member is as easy as filling out a membership application and paying the annual dues. For just $65.00, you can enjoy the convenience of online delivery of the monthly MTOA Magazine, or if you love the feel of a printed copy, it’s only $85.00 to have it mailed right to your door! These small fees really echo our community-driven spirit. Plus, as a member, you’ll gain access to a wealth of resources like technical support, fantastic networking opportunities, and exclusive savings on marine products and services!

National and Regional Meets

MTOA brings together members through national gatherings that create wonderful opportunities to connect, share experiences, and enjoy engaging seminars and fun social activities. These events nurture lasting friendships among fellow cruising enthusiasts. Additionally, our regional groups host monthly meetings, letting members connect more often in their local communities. These local get-togethers often include relaxed seminars, delicious shared meals, and organized cruises, which help strengthen our sense of community.

The Boater Forum: A Hub of Knowledge and Support

One of the truly fantastic features of the MTOA is its vibrant boater forum, which acts as an inviting center for sharing insights and helpful tips. Members enjoy seeking advice on all sorts of boating topics, from maintenance and repairs to navigation and safety suggestions. This forum is especially known for its technical support, as seasoned members and marine experts frequently jump in to offer real solutions to common challenges faced by boat owners. The wonderful collaborative spirit of the forum really boosts the knowledge and confidence of everyone involved!

ABYC - The Clever Boater

MTOA members also have the wonderful opportunity to enjoy a business membership subscription to the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). With this subscription, members can easily access all the ABYC Boating Safety Standards. Plus, it opens the door for members to enroll in ABYC training courses and receive training materials, books, and literature at special discounted prices just for ABYC members!

The MTOA Port Captain Program

The Marine Trawler Owners Association (MTOA) has a wonderful initiative known as the Port Captain program, which is all about creating a stronger sense of community and support among its members. Our Port Captains are seasoned MTOA members spread across different areas who generously volunteer their time to assist fellow members with their local knowledge, advice, and resources. Think of them as friendly, local contacts who are more than happy to recommend the best marinas, anchorages, delicious dining spots, and reliable repair services. This program truly enhances the boating experience, particularly for those navigating unfamiliar waters, by providing a caring network of knowledgeable peers who are eager to help and ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. The Port Captain program beautifully reflects MTOA’s commitment to nurturing a supportive and connected community of trawler enthusiasts. Brenda and I are Port Captains in Palm Coast, Florida!

Different than the AGLCA Looper Group

The MTOA (Motor Trawler Owners Association) and the AGLCA (America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association) share a wonderful mission of promoting boating activities and building a vibrant community. However, each organization has its own special focus! The MTOA embraces trawler-style boating enthusiasts, offering a wealth of resources designed just for them. Their discussion forum is a great place to find friendly technical advice, especially on electronics and marine electrical systems.

On the other hand, the AGLCA truly celebrates individuals embarking on America’s Great Loop—a wonderful waterway adventure that circles the eastern United States. Both groups provide fantastic support and networking opportunities, but MTOA is all about enjoying the leisurely and steady cruising lifestyle that trawlers embody. Meanwhile, the AGLCA embraces a wider range of cruising experiences that can excite any boating enthusiast!

The MTOA Is A Great Community
